It would be funny...
if it wasn't so sad! This weekend Tim and I experienced our first case of parental brain loss. This is a terribly understudied disease that is one of the single most common symptoms of living with a toddler (or a newborn, or an infant, or a teenage I am sure). Growing up, I always heard the phrase "insanity is hereditary, you get it from your children." I experienced the full weight of that statement Saturday evening. Tim and I thought it would be nice after a couple of weeks of illnesses going around the house (p.s., the plague that Noah had last weekend hit me last Tuesday and I was down for the count the rest of the week!), it would be nice to take an evening out to dinner. The day didn't start well, with an unexpected visit to the pediatrician's office, an ear infection, and a shiny new prescription for amoxicillin, but Noah seemed to be in a great mood, so we figured we would let him nap as long as he wanted and then see how things looked. He slept for 4 hours and woke up in a spectacular mood, so we headed out to Ikea to get him his own set of chairs and a table and then after a short trip to Target, we headed out to some place loud for dinner. Loud, so if he decides to join the crowds, no one will notice! Some where in Target, Noah lost his will to live and threw a full on hissy fit in the kids section...I mean throwing himself down on the floor and screaming...not pretty people...type of fit. I hurried as much as possible and in less than 15 minutes we were in and out of the store. The fit was so spectacular though that it carried over a bit into dinner with the throwing and the breaking of the crayons, the scribbling on the table even after being repeatedly asked to stay on the paper please. When things started to escalate, Tim and I simultaneously started to wonder if we had made a terrible terrible decision. Of course the waitress is in and out asking us all sorts of valid, yet ill-timed questions. Finally, drinks and dinners were ordered, a snack was pulled out for the ill-tempered little man, and things started to look up. That us until about 2 minutes before our meals showed up when we suddenly wondered which adult had ordered for Noah???? Oh great, yeah nice, we forgot to order food for the child!!! In the midst of all of the chaos of toddlers and waitresses, we managed to order drinks and dinner for us, but nothing for the small person...nothing at all! Thankfully, our waitress was a mother herself and got us a rush order of mac and cheese so quickly that Noah hardly noticed the difference in timing, but still...really?! We forgot the child while he was sitting right there! We'll take our parents of the year award now!
